- On Average, Women are Exposed to Many Potentially Harmful Chemicals or Irritants Through Daily Skin Care Regimens
PEAPACK, NJ (November 10, 2011) – American women use multiple skin care
products every day, but the majority do not understand the ingredients
that are actually in those products. According to a new national survey
sponsored by Puristics®, a pure, safe and effective anti-aging skin care
line, 84% of women trust the ingredients in their skin care products are
not harmful to them, but in fact, women, on average, are exposed to a
range of potentially harmful chemical ingredients or irritants (e.g.
dyes, parabens, and artificial fragrances) as the result of their daily
skin care regimen.
Facial skin care products are a part of most women’s daily lives with
the majority applying day moisturizers (74%), cleansers (64%) and night
creams (55%) on a daily basis. However, some of their favorite creams
and lotions can contain potentially harmful or irritating chemicals
including propylparaben, methylparaben, triethanolamine and fragrances.
With 61% percent of women admitting that they only somewhat recognize
and understand the ingredient list on their skin care products, they may
be exposing themselves to these potentially harmful chemicals without
even knowing it.
Food Labels Scrutinized Significantly More Than Skin Care Product Labels
While women may not recognize or understand the contents of the products
they put on their bodies, they are concerned about the ingredients they
put in their bodies. Women have a higher recognition and understanding
of the ingredients in packaged food than in skin care items. Thirty-nine
percent of women say they understand ingredients in packaged food very
well as compared to the 15% who say the same for skin care products.
When asked about the importance of the list of ingredients when it comes
to the products they eat, 66% of women say ingredients in packaged foods
are extremely or very important while only 46% say the same about skin
care ingredients.
“Despite the growing demand for healthier food products that are devoid
of artificial ingredients, antibiotics and other unnecessary additives,
most people just don’t question or fully understand the long list of
chemical ingredients in the products that they apply to their skin every
day,” said M’lou Arnett, chief operating officer and co-founder of

Women definitely feel more knowledgeable about the potentially harmful
ingredients in packaged foods than those in skin care products. Only 7%
of women say they are extremely or very knowledgeable about the
potentially harmful chemicals in skincare products as opposed to the 24%
of women who claim to be extremely or very knowledgeable about the same
in packaged foods. Fifty-five percent of women claim that they are “not
at all” or “not very” knowledgeable about the potentially harmful
chemicals in their skincare purchases as opposed to 22% who claim the
same level of knowledge for their packaged foods.
Two years ago, Arnett and her business partner, Bob Casale, set out to

About the Puristics Survey
The survey was conducted among 1,000 nationally representative American
women between the ages of 30-65. The interviews were conducted online by
an independent market research firm between October 24th and October
27th. All women had to have considered using at least one anti-aging
product in the past year. It was not necessary for them to purchase or
use any products. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate
representation of the total U.S. population of women in this age group.
In the study, multiple independent sources that monitor and compile the
latest data on cosmetic ingredients were used to identify the number of
potentially harmful chemicals and irritants in leading skin care lines.
